Biography

Her work often centers on reinterpretations of the female form and themes of identity, most notably in exhibitions like Territorio de piel, where she explores contemporary re-readings of the Venus figure using unconventional materials. 

María José Lavín is a Mexican visual artist and sculptor known for her us of felt, clay, plaster and resin.  She studied art at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de San Carlos at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and continued training at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. Lavín has participated in more than 30 individual and group exhibitions in Mexico and internationally, including shows in the United States, Spain, and Austria. Her work often centers on reinterpretations of the female form and themes of identity, most notably in exhibitions like Territorio de piel, where she explores contemporary re-readings of the Venus figure using unconventional materials. Lavín has also been involved with the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte, receiving support from the Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (FONCA) for major projects.
