Frederik Nystrup-Larsen Denmark, b. 1992

Biography

Through research into endangered and extinct species, often in collaboration with local institutions, Nystrup-Larsen creates works that act as visual memorials to these plants.

Frederik Nystrup-Larsen (b. 1992, Denmark) Frederik Nystrup-Larsen explores memory and change in both nature and culture. His practice looks at what disappears over time from plants and landscapes to emotions and symbols, and how regeneration and remembrance can emerge from that loss.

Through research into endangered and extinct species, often in collaboration with local institutions, Nystrup-Larsen creates works that act as visual memorials to these plants. For his recent presentation with V1 Gallery at CHART 2025 in Copenhagen, he presented a new series of paintings responding to mass extinction and the rapid disappearance of plant species. The works focus on endangered and extinct plants native to the exhibition area, developed in close collaboration with the Copenhagen Botanical Garden.

In Stolen Motifs, Vol. 1 (V1 Gallery, 2024) he explored repetition, authorship and visual citation, drawing on an archive of found imagery to challenge originality in a digitally saturated culture. His collaborative project 6/Daily CASH ONLY (The Plug, Tokyo, 2024), created with artist Oliver Sundqvist, pushed the boundaries between object, gesture, and consumption, layering material excess with absurdist ritual. Early projects like Love is Not Enough BOY (Eighteen, Copenhagen, 2021) examined masculinity as a fragile construct, using ephemeral materials to stage vulnerability and collapse.

Nystrup-Larsen lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. He holds an MA from The Royal College of Art, sculpture department, London, and a BA from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design. Before his solo career, he made several exhibitions and collaborative projects with Danish fellow artist Oliver Sundqvist. Recent exhibitions include Stolen Motifs, Vol. 1 at V1 Gallery, Copenhagen (2024); 6/Daily CASH ONLY, with Oliver Sundqvist at The Plug, Tokyo, Japan (2024); and Love Is Not Enough BOY at Eighteen, Copenhagen, Denmark (2021).
