Frederik Nystrup-Larsen Denmark, b. 1992

Biography

Through research into endangered and extinct species, often in collaboration with local institutions, Nystrup-Larsen creates works that act as visual memorials to these plants.

Frederik Nystrup-Larsen (b. 1992) is an artist based in Copenhagen, Denmark. He holds an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art in London.

In the early part of his career, Nystrup-Larsen engaged in a range of artistic collaborations and projects that further expanded his cross-disciplinary approach, allowing form and process to move fluidly between media while maintaining a restrained, conceptually grounded use of personal experience.

Nystrup-Larsen’s practice unfolds across sculpture, painting, and installation, moving beyond traditional artistic categories as form shifts between figuration and abstraction. His works often incorporate personal experiences as a point of departure, used to explore ideas and themes that resonate universally rather than narrate his own biography. He frequently employs aesthetically compelling strategies as a form of communication to address topics that involve social critique or draw attention to pressing issues in society.

In recent years, Nystrup-Larsen has focused on plant blindness through oil painting, investigating how plant species that constitute our everyday environments increasingly go unnoticed and undervalued. This growing disconnection from nature contributes to a diminished understanding of plants’ essential role within the biosphere and accelerates the loss of biodiversity. In response, Nystrup-Larsen documents, preserves, and revitalises local flora. His works function as an archive — one that seeks to restore awareness and foster renewed engagement with the natural world.
